The million dollar question and the most common when enquiring about having your garden designed and landscaped:  - 'How much does it cost to landscape my garden?'

The cost of a landscaping project varies quite considerably from garden to garden as there are so many factors which make up the total. The obvious one is the actual size of the area to be landscaped. Other considerations are:

Complexity of design - A straight forward build consisting of a patio, lawn, planting beds and fencing will cost a lot less than a garden with raised beds, in built seating, curves, pergolas, brick walls and many more additions that take time to construct and add to the material cost.

Materials - The are a vast range of materials that can be used on the paving alone, from man made concrete paving slabs to Indian sandstone, granite, limestone, travertine, basalt, slate to name a few. When it comes to timber the most common is pressure treated softwood then more expensive options such as cedar, Balau, oak, Ipe and a load more. Even different grades of lawn affect the price as does species of plants, installing lighting and irrigation.

It is very easy to underestimate the cost of a garden build, there is a lot that goes into the construction that is not visible, like the foundations for walls, bases for patios, soil for lawns, frames for decking etc which are often not taken into consideration by the client when thinking about the cost of having a garden landscaped. Another large expense is the waste which accumulates from an excavation and build project. Due to the government trying to cut down on the amount of waste material disposed of, tax on waste has risen considerably in the last few years making skips and grab lorries expensive, all contributing to the cost. Then there’s the dreaded VAT adding 20% to the total bill!

Here are two of our past gardens and their cost to give you an idea. Both them included stripping out the original garden and starting from scratch on a blank canvas. The first was quite straight forward and took around two weeks to complete. The second took about a month as there was a lot more detail.

This garden had an area of crazy paving and over grown shrubs. We levelled the area built brick planters with oak bench seating and laid Peacock slate.
Total cost - £8k inc Vat.

As you can see this garden is not that much bigger than the last one but there is a lot of detail. A large water feature, curved rendered walls, thatched seating area, hardwood decking, paving seating. Total cost - £20k
