This month we want to show you how this Garden Room project upgraded the lifestyle for a busy family who desperately needed extra living space, and a garden office to work from home.

We love to celebrate some of the amazing transformations we have seen from installing our bespoke garden rooms for our customers! This month, we want to celebrate Luke and Zoe – busy parents with two young children. 

We worked with them to transform their garden into a multipurpose space that combines style, comfort, and practicality. In this article we walk you through the full process from design, to build,  to show you how it’s done.

The Brief: A Family Sanctuary and Home Office Haven

Luke and Zoe wanted to maximise the value of their outdoor space, envisioning a versatile area that would allow for both family time and focused work. With Luke working from home as a freelancer, they needed a serene, distraction-free workspace separate from the house – but it was equally important to create a cosy spot for the family to unwind together. We also wanted this to flow with the garden and create more outdoor space too.

Before: A Blank Canvas with Limitless Potential

Initially, Luke and Zoe’s garden was underutilised, with open grass and minimal landscaping. It had the space but lacked structure and functionality, making it difficult to enjoy year-round.

After: The Enchanted Garden Workspace

Urban Escapes transformed this open garden into a serene, self-contained sanctuary. With expertise in high-grade installations and bespoke designs, Urban Escapes meticulously crafted every detail of the garden room to reflect Luke and Zoe’s needs.

This beautiful garden room includes not only a light and bright work space, it also provides enough space for gym equipment for working out after work. Plus, Luke doesn’t even need to leave to have a shower after working out – this garden room also features a separate bathroom with matt black features from electric shower and bi-fold shower door to electric towel rail.

We also installed a kitchenette area with shaker style doors, and a classic Belfast sink to make this a great garden guest room too! 

The fully insulated walls and soundproofing ensure that the space feels peaceful, helping Luke to separate work from home life effectively. 

For Zoe and the kids, the garden room doubles as a warm and inviting place to unwind – perfect for family movie nights!

Top Highlights of Luke & Zoe’s New Garden Room:

– Fully Insulated, for All-Year-Round Use: Urban Escapes used structurally insulated panels (SIPs) for the walls, roof, and floor, which offer highly efficient thermal values and exceptional strength. This creates a highly insulated, sound-proofed space that’s warm in the winter and cool in the summer. 

– Plenty of Natural Light: Luke and Zoe enjoyed selecting every detail, from the type of cladding to the window placements. The design includes large double glazed windows that allow for ample natural light. The studio has wide aluminium 5-pane bi-fold doors too to let not only the natural light in, but allow Luke and Zoe to enjoy the stunning views of their garden.

– Ideal Utilities for Uninterrupted Working from Home: For the studio to be used efficiently as a garden office retreat we installed 4 double plug sockets, 8 recessed LED ceiling spotlights and installed a Cat 5 internet cable from the router in the house to  the studio.

– Multifunctional Design: We added not only a kitchenette, but also a small bathroom with electric shower, and heated towel rail, meaning this garden room could even be used as a guest room too for when the Grandparents’ come to visit…or when your teenagers need a teen hangout space! This modern Garden Room is well designed to accommodate all Luke and Zoes’s needs and more!

– ToughWood Cladding for Low Maintenance and Beautifully Durable: The garden room’s exterior is finished with ToughWood cladding, a high-density, woodgrain-textured material that is both durable and low-maintenance. This cladding option not only complements the natural aesthetics of Luke and Zoe’s garden but also withstands harsh weather conditions with minimal upkeep.

– Stainless Steel Foundation for a Lasting, Stable Build: The room sits on a reinforced stainless steel foundation, which adds stability, longevity, and allows for full height clearance inside. Unlike a concrete base, this foundation type is ideal for sloped gardens, providing a sturdy base without sacrificing internal headspace. With Urban Escapes’ expertise, they were able to install the room quickly and seamlessly, enhancing the family’s garden without disrupting the surrounding landscape.

The Process:

How long does it take? Urban Escapes typically completes garden room installations in 1-2 weeks, depending on the complexity and customization requirements. Plus, most often don’t require planning permission as our garden rooms are designed to work within regulations meaning your build won’t be delayed by local planning, like a regular home extension would be!
