Our client, Michele is an Art Psychotherapist who is registered with The Health and Care Professionals Council. She works in the NHS but also does a limited amount of private practice work on the side of this. She was renting a room 2 afternoons (1-5pm) and one morning (9-12) so her new home office provides a welcome sanctuary and replacement for having to rent that room regularly. Her work is focussed on helping/healing children and teenagers who suffer from mental health and emotional problems. Clients mostly come with a carer or parent and are given 1-to-1 attention, staying for a minimum of an hour at a time. Her new garden studio provides the perfect peaceful space for her and her clients.
We built her a 5.4m x 3.8m garden studio with the simple yet contemporary Astana roof style. Flooding the studio with light and views of the garden are 1.8m wide French doors. With anthracite grey on the outside and white uPVC frames on the inside these contemporary doors are made with double glazing & toughened glass with a high security locking system fitted. Accompanying the doors are 2 up/downlighters to light the studio up in the evenings.
The studio was clad in ToughWood ‘cedar’ on the back and right side and on the front and left visible sides we upgraded to natural Western Red Cedar.
We also assisted with clearing & removing what was there before and replacing with 58.5m2 pressure-treated timber decking and an additional raised decking area that was 11.5m2.
Internally the walls and ceiling in the studio were plastered and painted with two coats of white emulsion, finished with 100mm skirting board.
Ensuring the studio made the ideal contained home office we also installed a shower room (950mm x 2.5m) with insulated stud walls and door, electric wall-mounted shower with a 900mm x 900mm tray, interior shower panelling glass bi-fold screen, towel radiator; compact toilet and basin with electric water heater tap and splashback which also had a 1.2m wide x 600mm high bathroom window with obscure glass.
We also installed a little kitchenette space featuring a 1m long kitchen worktop and double cupboard with electric water heater tap, stainless steel sink and splash back. It includes a 500mm wide cupboard unit, with space for a narrow freestanding fridge next to it.
Having a separate kitchen and bathroom means Michele can not only make her clients feel comfortable with refreshments and have the ability to use a washroom but it also helps her to keep her work life separate from her home life.
To complete the studio we installed 7 recessed ceiling lights, 3 double plug sockets and a 1200w wall mounted panel heater to ensure Michele had all the necessities to use her new garden office day or night, winter or summer.
